Understanding the types of negative thoughts is a good way to catch them when you are doing it yourself. Certain phrases to watch out for are: “I need to be perfect or it doesn’t matter”, “I am a failure. People wouldn’t like me if they knew the real me,” “The worst things always seem to happen to me,” or “My life feels like a big disappointment.” If you find yourself spending time trying to guess what people think about you, you can only be happy if people like you. Or, if you need approval from them, then you are thinking negatively.
